Hello friends,
July is in full swing here on the Peninsula, and the studio is buzzing. The fireweed is just beginning to bloom from the bottom up, signaling the height of Alaskan summer. It’s that magical time of year when the days feel infinite, and the light lingers long past midnight.
Lately, I’ve been spending my early mornings on the banks of the Kenai River, catching the mist as it rises off the glacier-fed turquoise waters. This month’s painting sessions have been heavily focused on trying to capture that exact, fleeting glacial shade of blue-green—which changes completely depending on how the clouds gather over the mountains.
What's on the easel: I'm putting the finishing touches on three new large-scale canvases that explore Mt. Susitna (the Sleeping Lady) at twilight. These will be shipped to the Anchorage Museum for the upcoming juried exhibition in October. Subscribers will get the first preview of these works next week before they leave the studio!
Upcoming shows: I'm busy packing up crates for Salmonfest in Ninilchik (August 7–9). If you’re planning to attend, please stop by the Main Artisans Pavilion to say hello! I'll have a brand-new series of mini wood-slice magnets and hand-painted ornaments available, which are always popular at summer events.
Warmly,
